Personal Post #5: Seattle Pacific University

I am doing a very different post today because my mind has been reeling all week.
As someone who is very used to hearing about shootings happening at schools and universities, the events that happened in Seattle this week hit too close to home. For those of you who didn't hear, earlier this week, a gunman opened fire at Seattle Pacific University. The events led to the death of one and two victims still remain in critical condition.

Now, while I personally don't go to SPU, my university is fairly close to where this happened and I know people that attend the university. What happened this week shouldn't have happened. Nothing like this should ever happen. In the media more and more, you hear about innocent people losing their lives and being injured by acts of gun violence.

Clearly, things like this have happened before and have happened recently, but this time around, the shooting became very real for me since I am a part of the greater Seattle area and am a fellow Seattle university student.

Just yesterday, warnings emails were sent out to my school because there was a man with a gun literally across the street from campus that couldn't be located. The fact that I live in a world where I have to worry about things like this happening is down right ridiculous.

Do I live in an urban area? Yes. But this type of stuff happens all of the time and while the media spends so much time talking about the tragedies and heroes of each story, they fail to try and do things to stop this from happening in the future.  As a society, we shouldn't have to live in fear and be on edge and worry about something happening to us and the people around us.

Now, I am not here to stand a pedestal and be a sudden advocate for events like this, I just want you all to stop and think about the events that have been happening at schools, in public places and in homes for years and years. This is the type of stuff we should be working to prevent.

I always want to take the time to tell you guys to be educated and know what is happening in the world. Take ten or fifteen minutes a day to watch the news or go online and see events that are occurring. I cannot stress enough how important it is to not be ignorant with what is going on in the world.

My thoughts go out to everyone impacted by the events at SPU this week.

Hope all is well.
Just love me:
